Armagh in Brampton: Supporting the Journey to Independence

Armagh’s Brampton location marks an important evolution in how we support women and their families as they transition from crisis shelters to independent living.

These purpose-designed units offer a vital next step for individuals who are ready to move forward but still face barriers to securing stable housing. While our Mississauga location continues to provide crucial support for higher-needs families, our Brampton units are tailored for those who are lower-risk and prepared for greater autonomy — yet still need time, support, and affordability to fully regain independence.

Launched in January, the Brampton site welcomed five residents from Armagh Mississauga. By April, seven more families joined, referred through local safe centres, reflecting growing demand and the success of this supportive housing approach.

This new chapter was made possible through the generosity of a local builder who dedicated 12 units in a modern, secure apartment building exclusively for Armagh residents. Their partnership has created a safe, dignified, and affordable housing option that promotes long-term stability. Each resident contributes rent geared to income, fostering responsibility and self-sufficiency.

The Brampton site emphasizes independence, with no on-site staff and minimal day-to-day supervision. A Transitional Housing Support Worker provides monthly check-ins and is available for additional support as needed. Residents must be employed or enrolled in education or training programs, and are actively working toward their short- and long-term goals.

This initiative bridges the gap for women who are ready to take that final step toward independent living. By complementing our Mississauga residence, the Brampton facility strengthens our continuum of care and deepens our commitment to helping survivors build brighter, more secure futures.

Reflecting on a Walk Toward Hope: One Year of Armagh Brampton

One year ago, twelve families arrived at Armagh Brampton, each carrying untold stories of survival, strength, and the desperate need for safety. These were women and children escaping abuse—some with little more than the clothes on their backs, all with a common goal: to start over.

To mark this milestone, our community came together in a powerful act of reflection and solidarity. Attendees were invited to imagine the journey of a woman fleeing violence—her fear, her courage, and the long, uncertain road ahead. We symbolically retraced a small part of that journey, walking side by side, not to replicate her experience, but to honor it.

Before we walked, we heard the moving testimony of a current Armagh resident. Her words grounded us in the reality of what so many women face: the weight of leaving, the fear of what comes next, and the quiet strength required to take that first step toward freedom. Her story reminded us that behind every door at Armagh Brampton is a story of resilience, of rebuilding, and of hope.

As the walk came to a close, we gathered to reflect on what Armagh Brampton represents—a place of safety, support, and healing. Guests were offered a glimpse inside a model unit, providing insight into the kind of welcoming, secure environment that residents now call home. Light refreshments and heartfelt conversations filled the space, creating a sense of shared commitment to this vital cause.

The event was more than a celebration—it was a moment of connection. A reminder that while a walk to safety might be short for some, for many women and children, it is long, uncertain, and deeply personal. And yet, with community support, that walk can lead to something life-changing.

We are grateful to everyone who walked with us, listened, reflected, and stood in solidarity. Together, we mark this one-year milestone not just as a point in time, but as a promise—to keep walking alongside those who need us most.
